This mix comes to you from a warm and soulful afternoon. There are plenty of cross-influences at play–Serge Gainsbourg, The Supremes, The Carpenters, Al Green–but it’s a tight little package. I’m happy with the transitions. You’ll hear sounds ranging from Latin funk and reggae to Afrobeat and blue-eyed soul. As always, I’ve included some funky obscurities, oddities, and echoes from our collective pop music memory. (Listen for the horn sample behind Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and the backing track to “Rill Rill” by Sleigh Bells.)

As for the psych influences, it’s hard to get that paisley-inflected funk without including Lee Moses, but I think I’ve captured his spirit fairly well.

Thanks for a great looking blast from the past. The songs aren’t familiar, but some of the artists are. The Five Stairsteps did one of my all time favorite songs “Ooh Child”. The Prince Charles photo is fun.
